Heritage June 2025 - and the Stoke 100!

Glebe have a week of locality learning to celebrate heritage and the centenary of Stoke on Trent
It was all things Potteries this week when Glebe went all out for its annual heritage week. There has been so much learning about Fenton and wider Stoke-on-Trent. This year was especially memorable as it took place during the Stoke-on-Trent century week, marking one hundred years since the announcement of George V (during his visit to Stoke Royal Infirmary) that Stoke-on-Trent was to be granted city status. KS2 has looked in detail at how the six towns were federated back in 1910 and how Fenton was very poorly treated during the process!
Each class in KS1 and KS2 has been on a heritage walk in the local area of Fenton to see how building use has changed over time and to spot remaining pieces of history and heritage clues!
Early years were treated to a very special visitor, Jo Ballantine of Grace and Flo, a local artist specialising in creating paintings and prints using oatcakes, whilst the rest of the school celebrated the stunning work of Sid Kirkham and considered how his paintings offer us a window into Stoke-on-Trent's past.
Then, the humble oatcake was celebrated in all its glory through poetry, with a specific focus on the stoke dialect of old. To top this off, the children were served delicious oatcakes for lunch, yum!
This was all rounded off with a special assembly on Friday, where all the children shared their work. It really has been a special week. Remember, every walk can be a heritage walk...what will you see next time you go outside?
